J an. 13 — A Lakebay family stepped out into sub-freezing temperatures after their smoke detector alerted them to a chimney fire. The metal flue of the wood stove was described as cherry red while they heard crackling inside the pipe. Firefighters investigated with thermal imaging camera and found the fire had been contained to the stove pipe. The occupants were advised to have the pipe professionally cleaned and inspected before they attempt to use it again.

Nobody was hurt in the fire. The flames were mostly contained to a single roaster about the size of a car.

Q: We just had our chimney cleaned, and the gentleman is advising us to have our chimney lined, for which he gave us an estimate of $2,800. How in the world does one know when a chimney needs a liner? Our house is 40 years old. Is that an indicator that it does? He took a flashlight and showed me a pile of whitish material in the back of the furnace pipe that was about 21/2 inches high. What do you think?
