Barbara Mitchell Hutton has been hired as the new head of school at Nova School in Olympia.
She will replace Jack Fallat, who is retiring after leading the 100-student independent, academically challenging middle school since July 2010.
Hutton founded the Rocky Mountain School for the Gifted and Creative in Boulder, Colo., and led it for about 19 years. She also served as interim head for the Helios New School in Palo Alto, Calif.
I am thrilled to become part of the Nova School and the South Puget Sound community, Hutton said in a release. Building on such a strong legacy of service to middle school-age learners and their families is a privilege.
Hutton was chosen from more than 50 educators who applied for the post.
She has a bachelors degree in sociology and social work from the University of Texas at Austin and a masters degree in business administration from the University of Northern Colorado.
Hutton will begin at Nova on July 1.
