Peninsula High boys basketball coach Jake Jackson told me last week — after a rather demoralizing loss to a very talented Lakes team — that his Seahawks weren't giving up on this season.
The results over the past two games have demonstrated the Seahawks' resolve. Following a victory over Bonney Lake on Friday, the Seahawks upset the Decatur Gators at the Hawks Nest on Tuesday night.
Those victories have pushed Peninsula into playoff position in the Class 3A South Puget Sound League. With only three games left, the Seahawks hold a one-game edge over Bonney Lake for the final spot to the postseason.
Tuesday's 63-53 victory over Decatur was an historic one, the first for the Seahawks over the Gators since the SPSL 3A revamped itself for the 2010-11 season. JaQuori McLaughlin scored 20 points for Peninsula, offsetting a huge night from Decatur's Kevin Young, who went off for 31 points.
Peninsula was down 36-26 at halftime, but owned the second half, including a 19-5 surge in the third period.
Peninsula has three games left in the regular season — at Enumclaw, home against Auburn Mountainview and at Lakes. A win in any of those would likely clinch a postseason spot.
Over in the Class 4A Narrows League, Gig Harbor kept its slim playoff hopes alive Wednesday night with a 61-55 victory over Yelm at John Gorrow Gymnasium. Jared Anderson scored a game-high 19 points for the Tides and Carson Gearhart added 15. The Tides trailed 31-27 at halftime but picked it up from there.
Gig Harbor will likely have to win its last four games extend the season, as the Tides are still 2 1/2 games behind Central Kitsap for the league's fourth and final playoff spot. On Friday night, they'll travel to Stadium, and that could be a good opportunity for a victory as the Tides were competitive in a 45-40 loss to the Tigers earlier this month.
On the girls side, Peninsula looks to have punched its postseason ticket with Tuesday's 60-25 rout at Decatur. Seahawks coach Steve Jacobson called up several JV players to fill the roster against the winless Gators, and veterans Tyler Stolz (14 points), Leigh Iosia (13) and Toni Helwig (11) carried much of the weight.
Gig Harbor's girls lost a key league matchup Wednesday night at Yelm, which has been on fire since losing to the Tides a few weeks ago.
In the teams' second meeting, the Tides struggled to stop Yelm's Karli Shaw, who scored a game-high 15 points. Naphtali Ward had 12 points and Taylor Talen added 10 for the Tides, who lost for only the second time in their last nine outings.
Likely victories against Stadium (live coverage at 7 p.m. Friday on Twitter @gateway_neil) and South Kitsap are coming up for the Tides, but they may need an upset of Central Kitsap or Bellarmine Prep to reach the playoffs. They're sitting in fifth place, a half-game behind CK and Olympia.
