Bellingham town hall on health care reform set for Tuesday

BELLINGHAM - A town hall on the future of health care and health care reform in Whatcom County will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Municipal Court, 2014 C St. in Bellingham.

The event runs 6 to 8 p.m. Whatcom Alliance for Health Advancement is organizing the event through its Community Organizing Group for Health, which is made up of community members.

It will feature a panel that will include:

-- Kelli Linville, mayor of Bellingham.

-- David Lynch, doctor with Family Care Network.

-- Sean Farnand, member of the Community Organizing Group for Health and Whatcom Medic One paramedic captain.

-- Liz Baxter, executive director of We Can Do Better.

-- Larry Thompson, executive director of Whatcom Alliance for Health Advancement.

-- Nancy Steiger, chief executive officer and chief mission officer for PeaceHealth St. Joseph

Medical Center.

Tickets are free, but seating is limited. Email dmpinney@hinet.org to reserve a seat.

BTV10 will video and broadcast the event. It also will be available for viewing at cob.org.

    The local event is being organized by Whatcom Counseling & Psychiatric Clinic. It grows out of the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

    "We want to make very clear this is about the mental health aspects of Newtown. This is not about guns. That's a whole different conversation," said Dave Kleiber, president of the board of directors for the nonprofit clinic.

  • PeaceHealth calls off partnership talks with Catholic Health Initiatives

    PeaceHealth, which provides much of the health care in Whatcom County and operates the only hospital here, has ended its plan to combine with another Catholic health organization, both sides announced Wednesday, April 3.

    The deal between PeaceHealth and Catholic Health Initiatives was to be in place by June 30. The two faith-based health care systems had signed a non-binding agreement last August to create a joint venture by combining all of their operations, which include 16 hospitals, in three states.

    They agreed on Tuesday, April 2, to suspend their discussions, as they were going through due diligence and the approval process.

  • Farm workers plan long march and rallies May 5 in Bellingham

    Farm workers throughout Whatcom County have organized an 8-mile march from Guide Meridian in Laurel to downtown Bellingham in support of immigrants, worker rights and immigration reform.

    Supporters will gather at Abarrotes La Gloria Mexican market, 5974 Guide Meridian and begin their march at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 5. People are invited to walk the entire way or to join in at various spots where short rallies will be held: noon at Meridian and Prince streets in Bellingham; 1:30 p.m. at the Whatcom County Courthouse at Grand and Lottie streets, or join at the end at 2 p.m. at Maritime Heritage Park.

    Maru Mora Villalpando, a well-known advocate for the national Dignity Campaign, will speak at the park in a 2 p.m. program that also features music and poetry.

  • Whatcom employers honored for domestic violence awareness

    FERNDALE - Ten Whatcom County employers will be honored Thursday, Jan. 24, for their efforts to respond to and support victims of domestic violence in the workplace.

    The 10 a.m. ceremony at the Ferndale Police Department is part of an initiative by the Bellingham-Whatcom County Commission Against Domestic Violence to expand the community's response to victims of domestic violence. The workplace policy and procedures include information about victim safety and confidentiality, abuser accountability, victim and workplace safety plans, the state's Domestic Violence Leave Law and local resources.
