CBC plans financial aid session set for Sunday

Columbia Basin College on Sunday will provide information and assistance to Washington families wanting to apply for college financial aid.

College Goal Sunday is a statewide program that will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Lee R. Thornton Center on CBC's Pasco campus, according to a news release.

Students should attend with a parent or guardian and bring their parents' completed 2012 IRS tax return or other information on income and benefits. Students also will need their Social Security number, driver's license and Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, PIN.

Families who haven't completed their taxes for 2012 can use estimated information.

Students who attend and register on www.thewashboard.org will be eligible to win a college scholarship from the Northwest Education Loan Association.

    The program is scheduled to begin in fall 2013 and will allow people who have completed their registered nurse studies to get their bachelor's degree in nursing through Western's Woodring College of Education.

    With classes that meet once per week, the program aims to help students balance school with work and family lives. Coursework will include leadership skills, health care policy, patient safety and care coordination.

  • Tri-City high schoolers face crunch time for college

    A student in Connell High School's Class of 2013 recently came into Marcie Koch's office to talk about his future.

    Koch, one of the school's two counselors, said the student talked about continuing his education, a few subjects he was interested in and schools he might apply to -- including the University of Washington.

    "I realized he had a lot of ideas, but the deadline for (University of) Washington was Dec. 1," Koch said. "You can't talk about it on Dec. 3."

  • WWU pledges to offset potential financial aids cuts from sequester

    BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University students receiving federal financial aid will be able to continue getting the same amount of funding through the 2013-14 school year, even if their aid is affected by automatic federal spending cuts that could kick in Friday, March 1.

    The university has pledged to use reserves to offset any loss of aid to its current and prospective students this school year and next caused by the automatic cuts, known as the sequester.

    "We just think it is the right commitment to our students to help fill that gap to allow families and students to adjust and plan appropriately," said Eileen Coughlin, senior vice president of enrollment and student services. "We want to make sure our students' education is not interrupted by the potential change."

  • Family math night set for Wednesday at CBC

    A family math night will be at Columbia Basin College on Wednesday.

    The event will be in the CBC HUB atrium from 5 to 7 p.m. on the Pasco campus. It will have almost 50 stations with activities for kindergartners up to college-level calculus students. Prizes will be awarded.
