Comments sought on state hatchery plans

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife is taking public comments through Feb. 15 on updated draft management plans designed to guide fish hatchery operations in portions of Puget Sound.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife is taking public comments through Feb. 15 on updated draft management plans designed to guide fish hatchery operations in portions of Puget Sound.

The draft plans, known as a hatchery and genetic management plans, describe the operation of the state hatchery programs for Tumwater Falls fall chinook salmon; Minter Creek fall chinook; Hamma Hamma River fall chinook; and Nooksack River chum and spring chinook.

The draft plans are available at wdfw.wa.gov/hatcheries/hgmp or at the department’s office in Olympia. To schedule an appointment to review the plans in person, call 360-902-2782.

Comments can be submitted by mail to Hatcheries, 600 Capitol Way N., Olympia, WA 98501, or by email to HGMP-PScomments@dfw.wa.gov.

The department is updating the draft plans to better reflect current efforts to protect and restore wild salmon.

    Preparations for catching and storing these every-other-year returning pinks may involve buying more No. 2 FST lures or perhaps rigging up a smoker. Regardless, local anglers won't have to travel to the Skagit unless they want to.

    Research demonstrating the need for continued late winter/spring bans on motor vehicles on Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife lands north and east of Ellensburg will be reviewed at a public gathering Monday, Jan. 7.

    The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Central Washington University, 400 East University Way, in rooms 137 A & B of the Student Union & Recreation Center. Campus parking is free.

    Seasonal driving bans for parts of the Quilomene and Whiskey Dick wildlife areas have been in effect for four years in an effort to keep wintering elk from fleeing to neighboring farms, where they do damage and compete with livestock.

  • Deadlines coming this week for fishers and hunters

    The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's comment period on proposed changes to sport fishing regulations for 2013-14 closes Tuesday, Jan. 29.

    The fish and wildlife commission is considering at least seven changes applying to Whatcom and Skagit County waters.

    This rule-making process has its limits, covering the rules for recreational fishing for gamefish in freshwater, as well as some finfish and shellfish in marine waters. Rules and seasons for halibut and salmon for non-treaty anglers in Washington derive from separate processes in January and April.
