The Steilacoom School Board voted to modify the 2012-13 school year calendar to reflect a release-time change for Wednesday, March 13. That day had been a scheduled one-hour early release day. But it also is a day for mandatory testing at the high school.
The state requires that testing days be full days of school so students have adequate time to complete tests. As a result, the district recommended modifying the calendar to make March 13 a full day.
About 10 versions of standardized tests are being given to Pasco School District's almost 16,000 students during 16 weeks, with testing season stretching from January to the end of May.
"It ends up being quite a bit when you look at it," said Mark Garrett, the district's information systems and assessments director.
School officials say testing is important. Results can help a district track a student's progress and identify if that student needs more help or can move on to more difficult material. Tests also can show whether the district's curriculum is properly teaching students.

BELLINGHAM - More than 100 students will put their ideas to the test in a countywide science fair at St. Paul's Academy Saturday, March 9.
This is the first time that the school is hosting its Whatcom County Science Fair, which will run for most of the day in Markell Hall at the upper school building, 1509 E. Victor St.
