Everything became perfectly clear Sunday at Torrey Pines. Tiger Woods was on his game and headed to yet another win.
Woods seized control in the fog-delayed Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego with a 3-under 69 and a four-shot lead (14-under 202) after the third round. He stretched his lead to six shots (17 under) through seven holes of the final round when play was suspended because of darkness.
Play will resume today on the public course on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean.
Defending champion Brandt Snedeker, 4 under through 13 holes of the final round, and former champion Nick Watney, 3 under through eight, were tied for second at 11 under.
Woods was wild off the tee in the final two hours of a long day, but even that didn’t matter. He chipped in from 40 feet for birdie on the fourth, and drilled a shot out of the rough and onto the green for a two-putt birdie on the par-5 sixth.
Despite finishing his third round with a bogey on the easiest hole, No. 18, Woods, a seven-time winner on the course, began to pull away.
Players continued as long as daylight allowed. Woods didn’t bother switching to a red shirt for the final round.
SWEDEN’S HEDWALL VICTORIOUS IN AUSTRALIA
Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall won the New South Wales Open in Sydney, closing with a 4-under 68 for a two-stroke victory over defending champion Lydia Ko of New Zealand.
Hedwall finished at 13-under 203 on the Oatlands course. Ko, the 15-year-old amateur who won the Canadian Open last year, shot a 69.
WINGED FOOT GETS OPEN
The U.S. Golf Association will announce today that the West Course at Winged Foot will play host to the 2020 U.S. Open.
It will be the sixth open at the Westchester County club in suburban New York. Each visit has been memorable, most recently when Phil Mickelson made a double bogey at No. 18 in the fourth round and Geoff Ogilvy won in 2006.
The Open will be at Chambers Bay in University Place in 2015.
