Sea-Tac Airport set new passenger and retail sales records in 2012

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, buoyed by an influx of international passengers, set a new passenger traffic last year with 33.22 million passengers passing through the airport in 2012.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, buoyed by an influx of international passengers, set a new passenger traffic last year with 33.22 million passengers passing through the airport in 2012.

New figures from the Port of Seattle, the airport’s owner, show overall passenger traffic increased by 1.2 percent last year while international traveler numbers jumped by 8.8 percent.

    Last month, 61,402 people flew out of the airport, topping the previous record of 55,407 set in July 2012, according to data compiled by the Port of Bellingham.

    The spring break vacation tends to be the busiest time of year at the airport, and as of Friday, March 22, the airport's 2,800 main parking lot spaces were nearly full and most of the nearby private lots were also almost full, Daniel Zenk, aviation director, said in a news release.

    "Our motto is that we never turn people away, but it is a challenge during this popular vacation season," Zenk said. "Our regular lots are full and we are opening up new areas as quickly as possible, as well as allowing on-street extended parking."
