Community has opportunity to invest in students' education

I am writing in support of Puyallup School District’s upcoming bond on Feb. 12.

I am writing in support of Puyallup School District’s upcoming bond on Feb. 12.

In talking to friends and neighbors, it is clear that there is much confusion in regard to school funding. Stated simply, bonds are for building, and levies are for learning.

While the state constitution indicates it is the state’s paramount duty to make provisions for students’ education, nowhere does it indicate the state is responsible to build schools. The upcoming bond measure does just that: build and update our schools.

As a community, we have an obligation to invest in our future by investing in our education system. It is our obligation to provide the necessary facilities to help ensure our children are able to optimize their potential.

As a homeowner, supporting this bond is a sound investment that will pay far greater dividends than the $12 per month it will cost my family. A strong school system will ensure Puyallup will continue to flourish, help attract the best teachers and help provide the best tools to educate our children and grandchildren.

I have no desire to wait on folks in Olympia or Washington, D.C., to help determine how to get this done. We have the unique opportunity to control our educational destiny, and I believe our community should seize this opportunity.
