Seattle police’s gun buyback program drew a large response Saturday. But don’t expect a weapons buyback soon in Pierce County from the Sheriff’s Department.
“We won’t be doing one anytime soon due to budget,” Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Tuesday. “We can’t afford it and we want to look at the issues, successes and failures of others.”

Hoping to do something — anything — in response to mass shootings in Seattle and elsewhere, Seattle police and political leaders on Tuesday announced a new gun buyback program in which people can anonymously turn in their weapons for a shopping gift card worth up to $200.
UPDATE, 4:30 P.M.: Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, says, "The gunman is contained inside his residence. He is believed to be armed with multiple firearms and is refusing to come out or to put down his weapons. The SWAT team is en route."
UPDATE 9 p.m.: The man surrendered and was taken into custody with minor injuries, Troyer said.
EARLIER: The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department responded this afternoon to calls that a man was walking around, shooting at residences near the 5800 block of 13th Street Court Northeast west of Fife Heights. The man had gone inside his residence, where he was armed with multiple weapons.
Anyone with unwanted firearms or ammunition can take it to Saturdays gun turn in hosted by the Thurston County Sheriff's Office.
