BELLINGHAM - Residents of the 40th Legislative District can participate in a telephone town hall-style meeting Thursday, Jan. 31, with their legislators.

People who live in south Bellingham and southwest Whatcom County should receive a phone call from Rep. Jeff Morris, D-Mount Vernon, shortly before the 6 p.m. start time. People can answer the call and follow the prompts to participate in the town hall. Otherwise, call 1-877-229-8493 and enter 18646 to participate.

Morris, Rep. Kristine Lytton, D-Anacortes, and Sen. Kevin Ranker, D-Orcas Island, will make short statements then open the call to questions.

The legislators are in the third week of the 2013 session. To see what bills they have sponsored so far, go to dlr.leg.wa.gov/billsbysponsor.

  • Occupy Bellingham's next chapter: Once highly visible, group quietly focuses on issues

BELLINGHAM - Occupy Bellingham has moved indoors for the most part, holding meetings that fit around one table instead of requiring an entire park.

Many members have left since Occupy Bellingham was evicted from Maritime Heritage Park on Dec. 28, 2011. Some left out of frustration. Others found work. Still others were forced out. The dozen or so activists still going to general assembly meetings on Friday nights remain committed to fighting the corporate takeover of public institutions.

Those who are left say Occupy was the movement they had been waiting for all their lives.

People who attend will also learn how the public can participate in shaping major developments, such as the Bellingham waterfront. Information in the class is relevant to both city and county residents.
