FRIDAY, FEB. 1

The application period for spring turkey controlled hunts opens Feb. 1 and runs to March 1. Spring turkey seasons start April 15 — some controlled hunts open later. Turkey youth hunts open April 8. Hunters may apply for controlled hunts at any hunting and fishing license vendor; Fish and Game office or online. The application fee is $6.25 per person for residents and $14.75 for nonresidents. An additional fee is charged for telephone and Internet applications. A turkey controlled hunt permit costs $7.75. Hunters must have a 2013 Idaho hunting license to apply.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 6

THURSDAY, FEB. 7

First Thursday book signing: 6:30 p.m. at Outdoor Exchange, 1415 Grove St., Boise. Local author Sandy Epeldi will present his new guidebook to hiking and trail running in the Boise region, “Boise Backcountry Adventures.” The presentation will feature photos, as well as some tips for hiking in the Boise region.   • Spring bruin hunt drawing deadline nears

    The deadline for entering Washington's 2013 drawing for spring black bear special hunt permits is Thursday, Feb. 28.

    Instituted to achieve specific management objectives rather than provide a general season opportunity, these limited-entry hunts in specific areas have defined numbers of participants and require each participant hunter to have a special permit awarded by lottery.

    This year's early season bear hunt lineup again consists of eight game management units in the Blue Mountains (southeast Region 1), six GMUs in the northeast part of the state (Region 1), all on the east side of the Cascades, in addition to five composite (specially designed) hunt areas in Western Washington.

  • Fishing options in flux, spring hunts start

    Well in advance of the last Saturday in April statewide start of trout season, State Route 20 across the North Cascades crest will reopen for the first time in 2013 to cross-state motorists at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 16.

    Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews from Skagit and Methow valley shops unburdening pavement on both sides of the summit were expected to link up Thursday, April 11, just west of Rainy Pass.

  • Deadlines coming this week for fishers and hunters

    The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's comment period on proposed changes to sport fishing regulations for 2013-14 closes Tuesday, Jan. 29.

    The fish and wildlife commission is considering at least seven changes applying to Whatcom and Skagit County waters.

    This rule-making process has its limits, covering the rules for recreational fishing for gamefish in freshwater, as well as some finfish and shellfish in marine waters. Rules and seasons for halibut and salmon for non-treaty anglers in Washington derive from separate processes in January and April.

  • Most steelheading shuts down at January's end

    The snow's only just begun to fly and winter steelheading, as we must now come to know, ends Thursday, Jan. 31.

    Some stream angling options do remain through the middle of February though even they may close prematurely if major hatchery programs do not get their needed hatchery fish for egg takes.
