Information sessions on Running Start planned

High school sophomores and juniors interested in the Running Start program can attend any of the upcoming information sessions, including one at Southridge High School tonight.

Running Start provides high school students access to college-level classes at Columbia Basin College and the opportunity to earn college credit before graduating from high school.

All the information sessions will be at a Mid-Columbia high school on Thursdays and go through mid-March. Here's the schedule:

-- Southridge High School, tonight at 7 p.m.

-- Kennewick High School, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m.

-- Kamiakin High School, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.

-- Pasco High School, Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m.

-- Chiawana and Prosser high schools, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at each location

-- Richland High School, March 7 at 6:30 p.m.

-- Hanford High School, March 14 at 6 p.m.

Yakima Valley Community College also will be offering information nights for high school sophomores and juniors interested in the Running Start program.

The schedule is:

-- Sunnyside High School, 7 p.m. Feb. 11.

-- Mabton High School, 6 p.m. Feb. 19.

-- Yakima Valley Community College's Grandview Campus, 6 p.m. March 6 in English, 6 p.m. March 7 in Spanish.

  • WCC offers SAT prep course for local high school students

    BELLINGHAM - High school juniors and seniors who need help getting ready for the SATs can take a prep course at Whatcom Community College starting Wednesday, Jan 30.

    The six-week course will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays through March 6 in room 108 of Kelly Hall at WCC, 237 W. Kellogg Road.

    Students will learn test-taking strategies and techniques for reading, writing and math. They'll also review common trouble areas, such as word problems, ratios, timed essays and statistics.

    The Pasco School Board has scheduled public information sessions for those who want to learn more about a $46.8 million bond initiative on the Feb. 12 ballot. Sessions are:

    -- 6 p.m. Tuesdayat Emerson, Angelou and Markham Elementary Schools.

    -- 6 p.m. Wednesdayat the C.L. Booth Building.

  • Pasco to hold Delta High information session

    Eighth-graders and their parents in the Pasco School District are invited to an information session about Delta High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the district's administrative offices, 1215 W. Lewis St.

    Delta High is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, school jointly operated by the Pasco, Kennewick and Richland school districts. The school is in Richland.

    Students who will be freshmen next year and live in the district may apply. Applications will be available at the meeting and must be returned by Feb. 27. The district's share of students will be determined by random lottery.

  • Phoenix High students holding expo March 21

    Community members are encouraged to attend the all-school Community Expo at Phoenix High School on March 21.

    The event is an opportunity for students at the project-based high school to show off their work from the year.

    It also gives interested eighth-graders and their parents an opportunity to check the school out.

  • Out and About: Snowmobiling, Birds of Prey, Idaho Junior Duck art contest

    The Cougar Mountain Snowmobile Club will host a poker-style fun run at the Wellington Snow Park off Idaho 55 at Smiths Ferry.
