Grief counselor, author to speak in Richland

A grief counselor and author who's appeared on Oprah Winfrey, Larry King Live and NBC's Today show will be giving a free talk in Richland.

Alan D. Wolfelt will be speaking on "Understanding Your Grief: Touchstones for Hope and Healing," which is the title of one of his books.

The program is for anyone who has experienced or is experiencing grief.

The presentation is from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Sunset Event Center, 915 bypass highway, Richland.

Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. on the day of the event. Space will be limited.

    For Shirley Schmunk, being a Gold Star Mother is about more than her own grief since losing her son, Spc. Jeremiah Schmunk, in Iraq in 2004.

    It's about reaching out to the other mothers, fathers, sisters or brothers who lost loved ones during wartime and helping them heal, even though they can never forget.

    Her work in recent years has included creating the annual Time of Remembrance event in West Richland, a memorial ceremony honoring men and women who lost their lives serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, or after returning home.

    It’s called Encounter 2013: A Place for Us. This cultural festival is March 16-17 at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick. Admission is free but donations are welcome.

    The two days will be packed with speakers, performers and cultural exhibits, all of which will address a central theme that asks, “What makes us most fully human and what unites us as people,” said Nina Powers, event coordinator.

  • Bellingham nonprofit that supports grieving children holds April 10 open house

    BELLINGHAM - Kids' Council NorthWest is having an open house Wednesday, April 10.

    People can learn how the nonprofit and its TreeHouse provide support and resources to Whatcom County youths experiencing grief and loss.

    The event is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 2114 Broadway in Bellingham.

  • Artists asked to dress up trash cans in Howard Amon Park in Richland

    Richland is asking artists to submit entries for artwork that will be displayed on trash cans in Howard Amon Park.

    Entries are to be a drawing of a favorite season on an 11-by-17 piece of paper using paint, pencil, chalk, etc.

    Deadline to enter is Friday. Entries must include name, email and phone on the back of the artwork, and can be dropped off at the Richland Public Library or the Richland Community Center.

  • Applications begin taken for Richland parks board

    RICHLAND -- The deadline to apply for a seat on Richland's Parks and Recreation Commission is May 3.

    Commission members must be residents of Richland. The commission meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. The term is three years.
