No one disputes there was an explosion Wednesday night in Tacoma.

But it was unclear Thursday just what happened.

A 32-year-old man called 911 about 11 p.m. Wednesday to report he and a friend were driving near state Route 16 and Jackson Avenue when an explosion pulled off the roof of his car. He waited until he returned home to University Place to report it.

Police say there was an explosion, but it was in the 2100 block of North Shirley Avenue, where officers found a “debris field” with mangled pieces of the same car model the victim was driving.

Several calls had come in earlier in the night about shots being fired in that area. Police believe the reported shots were some kind of explosion.

The man and his passenger were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police impounded the man’s car and are trying to determine what happened.
