Eating at the dining counter at Art House Cafe is like watching a live cooking show, only better because Neapolitan-style pizza and freshly baked English muffins go straight from the oven to your belly.
Asking why the Northwest has so many coffee houses is like asking why Vegas has so many slot machines. It’s because guzzling coffee is what we do here. Three have opened in recent weeks here’s a quick snapshot of each. The owners range from a chef with a South Sound restaurant resume, a first-time business owner who created his own coffeehouse after the economy sunk his old job and a retired police officer with a lengthy South Sound coffee resume. Know of a new coffee house or have a favorite place to get your buzz on? Comment below - tell readers about it.
The city has awarded more than $300,000 in capital and mini-grants for 25 projects in neighborhoods throughout the city, Mayor David Bieter announced Thursday.
The capital grants are intended to fund physical improvements within neighborhoods that will enrich the lives of citizens, enhance the quality of life and encourage a strong sense of community. Mini-grants can be used by neighborhood associations for non-capital projects.
“Every spring, it is a pleasure to announce the new projects that neighborhoods have undertaken to improve their surroundings” Bieter was quoted as saying in a city news release. “This year is particularly significant because several of the neighborhoods are doing projects in honor of (Boise's 150th anniversary) to capture their neighborhood’s rich history. I can’t wait to see the results.”
Looking older than your age is not usually a good thing unless you’re The Swiss Restaurant & Pub. Not yet old enough to drink (if it were a person), the tavern has become a downtown fixture since opening 20 years ago.
Three former employees of Engine House No. 9 started The Swiss in 1993. Jack McQuade managed the pub during the day, Bob Hill booked the music and handled the night shift, and Gayl Bertagni ran the kitchen. Twenty years later, McQuade and his wife are keeping the beloved downtown pub going, and marking its longevity with a full weekend of celebrating.
