A man was killed Friday morning after being struck by a Jeep as he jogged across a busy west Olympia intersection.
It was the first fatal crash investigated in Thurston County this year.
Phillip Nash, 59, of Olympia was jogging along Capital Mall Drive Southwest just before 6:30 a.m. and was crossing Cooper Point Road toward Big 5 Sporting Goods when he was hit, according to Olympia police Lt. Paul Lower.
The Jeep was headed along Cooper Point Road toward U.S. Highway 101.
Police shut down the intersection for nearly six hours as they investigated. Yellow crime tape blocked off the area as investigators searched for evidence.
Lower said they won’t have a definitive answer to what happened until next week. Several witnesses and the driver have been interviewed.
“We are still sorting through it to find out what happened,” Lower said.
Investigators are running diagnostics on the Jeep.
“They are going through it piece by piece,” Lower said.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday, according to Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock.
