Expect near normal temperatures and precipitation this month in the Tri-Cities, according to the National Weather Service.
Normal highs for the Tri-Cities during February are 47.9 degrees and normal lows are 30.6 degrees. Normal precipitation is 0.78 inch.
January was colder than normal in the Tri-Cities, according to the weather service. However, no daily temperature records were set in January at Hanford, where the Hanford Meteorological Station keeps records back to 1945.
The average temperature last month in the Tri-Cities was 32.8 degrees, which was 2.7 degrees below normal.
High temperatures averaged 37.2 degrees, which was 4.3 degrees below normal. The highest temperature, as measured in Kennewick, was 58 degrees Jan. 10.
Low temperatures averaged 28.4 degrees, which was 1.1 degrees below normal. The lowest temperature, as measured in Kennewick, was 18 degrees Jan. 13.
On 24 days, the temperature fell below freezing and for seven days the high temperature was below freezing.
At Hanford, the highest temperature was 58 degrees on the second to last day of the month. The lowest temperature was 12 degrees on Jan. 13 and 16.
Precipitation in January totaled 0.42 inch in the Tri-Cities, which was 0.66 inch below normal. However, there was measurable precipitation on five days.
Since the start of the water year in October, precipitation has totaled 4.02 inches, which is 0.21 inch above normal.
At Hanford, 1.6 inches of snow were recorded by the Hanford Meteorological Station. Last year Hanford had 9.3 inches of snow in January.
Total precipitation for this January at Hanford was 0.16 inch, although at least a trace of precipitation was noted on 13 days.
The fastest wind gust in January, as measured in Kennewick, was 37 mph, according to the weather service. At Hanford the peak gust of the month was 43 mph Jan. 8.
