An Oregon man driving more than 100 mph down Interstate 5 Sunday morning avoided serious injury after crashing into a tree, crushing the cab of the car.
The 20-year-old was driving a red Nissan 360Z south on the interstate at around 9 a.m. when he drove off the road near the Martin Way exit and into a tree, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Guy Gill.
The tree crushed the cab of the car, but the driver was not seriously hurt.
"If he would have hit the tree six inches further back in the cab, we would be investigating a fatality," Gill said. "He's very lucky to be alive."
The crash did not cause any backups. Speed is a factor in the crash. The man is being accused of second-degree negligent driving.
