FERNDALE - A 10-year-old girl was taken to a Seattle hospital a day after getting struck by a car in downtown Ferndale.

A 26-year-old Ferndale woman was crossing Main Street with the girl at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2. A woman driving a '97 Honda Accord turned left at the Second Street intersection and hit the girl, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary.

Soon afterward, the girl was up and talking. But the next day state troopers learned she was taken to Harborview Medical Center for head injuries, Leary said.

Francisca Sapp, 79, of Ferndale, was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

More information about the girl's condition wasn't available Tuesday, Leary said. Troopers declined to release her name.

A voicemail box for Sapp's phone was full.

  • 2 injured in Slater Road crash; alcohol suspected

FERNDALE — State troopers believe a drunk driver caused a head-on crash that injured two people Friday afternoon, May 3, near the Slater Road bridge over the Nooksack River.

Caley Tracey, 41, of Abbotsford, B.C., said he was driving a Volkswagen Jetta east near the bridge at 3:20 p.m. when he looked in his rearview mirror to see a car approaching at an alarming speed. A silver Ford Focus slammed into the back of the Jetta — at a speed that, in Tracey's best estimate, seemed like twice the 50 mph speed limit — sending both cars into oncoming traffic.

Other than whiplash, the four occupants of the Jetta escaped unscathed. But the Focus collided head-on with a westbound white Ford Escape. The impact pushed the Focus on top of a guardrail, leaving its back wheels hanging in the air. The front end crunched from the impact; the windshield shattered and peeled away.

  • Ferndale may go to every-other-week garbage pickup

FERNDALE - The city might offer garbage service no more often than once every other week, to encourage recycling and reduce truck traffic.

City Council members discussed the idea with SSC's chief financial officer, Amber Jones, at the Public Works and Utilities Committee meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The committee probably will review the idea again on Feb. 13. A start date for the new service, if any, has not been determined.

In meetings of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee late last year, committee members called for eliminating Sanitary Service Company's weekly service. In outlying parts of Whatcom County, trucks can travel several miles to pick up one container of garbage, city Administrator Greg Young said.
