Two men trying to flee Auburn police late Monday were injured after crashing a stolen vehicle in Fife, authorities reported.

The pursuit started about 11:45 p.m. when Auburn officers were notified of a 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo being stolen. After seeing it on state Route 18, police chased it down southbound Interstate 5 until the driver lost control and crashed into a cable barrier near the Port of Tacoma Road exit, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The Monte Carlo rolled several times, throwing the 22-year-old driver and 45-year-old passenger from the vehicle. Both men were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions were unknown Tuesday.

Another car suffered damage from flying debris, Auburn police Commander Mike Hirman said.

Southbound I-5 lanes were closed for hours while police processed the scene.
