Douglas Road in Ferndale to be closed Friday

FERNDALE - Douglas Road between Ferndale Mobile Village and South Church Road will be closed 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8.

Traffic will be detoured onto Imhoff Road and South Church. Local access will be allowed.

Crews will install a new water connection. For more information, call 360-384-4006.

  • Motorcycle procession in Ferndale Saturday to honor Vietnam vet

    FERNDALE - Motorists should expect some delays on Main Street around noon Saturday, May 18, as 150 or more motorcyclists ride through Ferndale to honor a former resident and Vietnam War veteran who died April 24.

    John Fassett, a 67-year-old Sandy Point resident, was a motorcycle enthusiast who graduated from Ferndale High School in 1963, joined the U.S. Army and served a tour in Vietnam.

    Fassett also worked at the ARCO Cherry Point Refinery for 25 years, served as a volunteer firefighter for Ferndale, and volunteered for Old Settlers Association and Ferndale Heritage Society.

  • Slater Road near Ferndale reopens Friday

    FERNDALE - Slater Road reopens at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at the Nooksack River Bridge.

    Traffic on the bridge will be reduced to a single lane, directed by flaggers, for the next two or three days. Crews will finish cosmetic and non-structural repairs.

    The bridge's steel supports were damaged Dec. 1 when struck by a tractor-trailer carrying a high load.

  • Mountain View Elementary to host reunion before school closes

    FERNDALE - Mountain View Elementary School parents, students, staff, alumni and the community can attend a reunion and send-off for the school Friday, May 10, before it closes at the end of this school year.

    The event will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the school, 5780 Hendrickson Road.

    The district is closing the school this year, after 53 years of serving Ferndale students.

  • Traffic reduced at Slater Road bridge April 24

    FERNDALE - Traffic will be reduced to one lane on Slater Road Wednesday, April 24, as state and Whatcom County road crews inspect the Nooksack River bridge.

    The lane closure will begin at 8 a.m. and be completed by 4 p.m. Flaggers will be on hand to direct traffic, but motorists should expect delays.

    The work is part of a biennial inspection by Whatcom County and the Washington Department of Transportation.

  • Ferndale may go to every-other-week garbage pickup

    FERNDALE - The city might offer garbage service no more often than once every other week, to encourage recycling and reduce truck traffic.

    City Council members discussed the idea with SSC's chief financial officer, Amber Jones, at the Public Works and Utilities Committee meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The committee probably will review the idea again on Feb. 13. A start date for the new service, if any, has not been determined.

    In meetings of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee late last year, committee members called for eliminating Sanitary Service Company's weekly service. In outlying parts of Whatcom County, trucks can travel several miles to pick up one container of garbage, city Administrator Greg Young said.
