Continuing demolition work on Tacoma’s Nalley Valley viaduct means overnight and early-morning closures this week, the State Department of Transportation reported.
The closures will take place on eastbound state Route 16 at Union Avenue and the on-ramp from Union Avenue to eastbound Route 16.
They will be from 11 tonight to 4 a.m. Friday; 12:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. Saturday; 12:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday; and midnight Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday.
Traffic will be diverted off Route 16 at Union Avenue. A signed detour will lead drivers to Interstate 5.
Also on Friday night, Transportation crews will shut down all lanes of South Center Street between South Pine and South Wilkeson streets while they demolish a portion of the old viaduct spanning South Center Street.
People can access businesses from South Wilkeson Street.
The Nalley Valley project is replacing the eastbound Route 16 structure and completing the Route 16/Sprague Avenue interchange. The westbound Nalley Valley viaduct opened in June 2011.
