A Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier has been arrested in connection with the torture and killing of her husband’s autistic stepbrother in Wisconsin last summer.
Shannon Remus, 26, who works as a military police officer, waived extradition Wednesday in Pierce County Superior Court and is expected to be transported back to Dane County to face charges in the next few days.
Detectives from Wisconsin arrested her Tuesday on base on suspicion of hiding a corpse. The woman’s husband, Jeffrey Vogelsberg, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse. Vogelsberg’s landlord and mother also are jailed in the case.
“Although she has denied any involvement in Matthew Graville’s murder, interviews and court testimony have confirmed that (she) had knowledge of Matthew’s murder and where he was buried,” according to a Dane County sheriff’s news release.
Graville’s mother reported him missing in September and told authorities she hadn’t spoken to him since March. Graville had been living with Vogelsberg and his wife in Mazomanie, Wis.
In November, Graville’s body was found in a makeshift grave. Detectives said he had been severely beaten and stored in a freezer before being buried.
Remus was away at Army basic training in July when authorities believe Graville was killed.
Vogelsberg forced his landlord to help him move Graville’s body into a freezer in the garage for four days while he went to Missouri to watch his wife graduate, according to charging documents.
Authorities said Vogelsberg severely beat Graville in the bathroom of their home one night and had a history of assaulting his stepbrother and shooting him with a BB gun.
The morning after the beating, Vogelsberg’s landlord found Graville surrounded by pill bottles on the couch. The landlord told police he helped Vogelsberg move the body into a freezer and bury it several days later because Vogelsberg was armed with a gun and threatened to hurt him.
Vogelsberg’s mother has been charged with stealing from Graville’s bank accounts.
