Earlier this week the Puyallup High School 60-piece wind ensemble received a big surprise when KJR 95.7 FM announced the group had won its 2013 "School of The Rock — Battle of the Bands" radio station contest.
The group's winning song was was its rendition of "Karn Evil 9" by the classic rock trio Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
Judges for this year's contest comprised Stilian Kirov, the assistant conductor of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra; Alan White, from progressive rock band Yes and John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band; and Vicci Martinez of NBC's "The Voice."
It was Martinez who officially announced the wind ensemble as the grand prize winner. This is the third time in four years that Puyallup High School has won. Their prize is $10,500.
Representatives of KRJ 95.7 FM in Seattle and The Rock Wood Fired Pizza restaurant presented the school with the over-sized check and grand prize trophy in a surprise announcement Feb. 5 during a live radio broadcast.
