Mariners make Shoppach signing official

The Seattle Mariners officially announced on Thursday the signing of catcher Kelly Shoppach to a one-year contract.

The Seattle Mariners officially announced on Thursday the signing of catcher Kelly Shoppach to a one-year contract.

Shoppach, 32, batted .233 with eight home runs and 27 RBI over 76 combined games with the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets last season.

In 536 career games with Boston, Cleveland, Tampa Bay and New York, Shoppach has hit .226 with 67 home runs and 207 RBI.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Shoppach, the Mariners designated pitcher Shawn Kelley for assignment.
