The Mid-Columbia Earth Month essay and video contest for kids in kindergarten through high school runs through April 8.
The theme is "Focusing our Energy on the Future." Cash prizes will be awarded based on the best use of theme, educational value, creativity and clarity, a news release said. The public will be able to vote on a fan favorite. The winner will be announced April 22, which is National Earth Day.

Online voting for the Earth Month Kids Contest has begun.
The competition encourages students to write an essay or make a video about how they conserve energy.

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, Trout Unlimited and Pierce County are hosting the Puyallup River Clean-Up from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 20.
