Tyler Griffey made an uncontested layup at the buzzer off a baseline inbounds pass and Illinois beat No. 1 Indiana, 74-72, on Thursday night in Champaign, Ill., the fifth consecutive week the nation’s top-ranked team has lost.
The Illini (16-8 overall, 3-7 Big Ten) trailed 41-29 at halftime and by double digits for most of the second half before closing the game on a 13-2 run over the final 3:36.
With the score tied, Indiana’s Victor Oladipo turned the ball over and recovered to block a breakaway layup by D.J. Richardson out of bounds with less than a second to play.
Griffey, who was open after setting a screen, took the inbounds pass from Brandon Paul with .9 seconds left and gently laid the ball into the basket.
The Hoosiers (20-3, 8-2) took over the top spot in The Associated Press’ Top 25 on Monday.
At No. 4 Duke 98, North Carolina State 85: Mason Plumlee scored 30 points and the Blue Devils (20-2, 7-2 Atlatic Coast Conference) held on to give the Wolfpack (16-7, 5-5) its third loss in a row. Seth Curry added 26 points and Quinn Cook had 21 for Duke.
At Texas A&M 70, No. 21 Missouri 68: Fabyon Harris had 17 points, including the winning 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play, to help the Aggies (14-8, 4-5 Southeastern Conference) upset the Tigers (16-6, 5-4).
Former Huskies guard Elston Turner scored 15 points for Texas A&M.
PAC-12 MEN
At USC 72, Washington State 68: Byron Wesley scored 20 points and J.T. Terrell added 12 points before fouling out as the Trojans (10-13, 5-5 Pacific-12 Conference) held off the Cougars (11-12, 2-8).
Wesley sparked USC early with 13 first-half points, but it was Terrell who ignited the Trojans when they needed it most. Terrell scored all 12 of his points during a 10-minute stretch of the second half. His 3-pointer with 5:26 remaining put USC up 56-53, and the Trojans held the lead the rest of the way.
Ari Stewart added 11 points for USC, and Jio Fontan had 10 points and a game-high 11 assists.
Washington State’s Brock Motum, who began the night ranked third in the Pac-12 averaging 18.3 points per game, scored 15 points on 6-for-16 shooting. Curtis grad DaVonté Lacy led all scorers with 21 points, while his backcourt mate, Mike Ladd, had 16 points for the Cougars.
USC scored two quick buckets to start the second half to take a 34-33 lead, but Washington State responded with an 8-0 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 41-34. The Trojans, though, took advantage of Motum’s uncharacteristically poor shooting night and managed to regain the lead.
Terrell was good on 3-pointers on consecutive trips down the court for the Trojans, who went up 49-47 with 7:45 to play. He hit his third 3 at the 5:26 mark to give USC the lead for good, but fouled out soon after.
USC forged ahead early in the game behind Wesley, who led all scorers with 13 first-half points. Stewart added eight points for the Trojans in the opening 20 minutes, including five points on consecutive possessions midway through the half that gave USC its biggest lead of the half, 21-14.
Colorado 48, at No. 19 Oregon 47: Andre Roberson scored the winner with 29 seconds remaining, capping the Buffaloes’ game-closing 8-0 run and Colorado (15-7, 5-5) handed the Ducks (18-5, 7-3) their third straight loss.
Roberson finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Buffaloes, who trailed 47-40 with just under 4 minutes to play.
E.J. Singler scored 14 points for the Ducks, who had their 20-game home winning streak snapped.
At Arizona State 66, California 62: Evan Gordon scored 23 points, Ruslan Pateev had 12 points and eight rebounds, and the Sun Devils (18-5, 7-3) held on to beat the Bears (13-9, 5-5).
Arizona State went up 16 points after a 17-3 run in the first half and kept the lead around double digits until Cal tightened up defensively in the closing minutes.
WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS
No. 16 North Carolina 80, at Boston College 52: UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell earned her 900th career victory with the Tar Heels’ rout of the Eagles.
Xylina McDaniel, daughter of former SuperSonics All-Star forward Xavier McDaniel, had 15 points and seven rebounds for North Carolina (21-3, 9-2 ACC).
Nicole Boudreau scored 16 points and Kristen Doherty added 13 with seven rebounds for Boston College (9-13, 3-8).
At No. 9 Georgia 61, Auburn 58: Jasmine Hassell scored 15 points and the Bulldogs (20-3, 8-2 SEC) overcame second-half struggles to hand the Tigers (13-10, 2-8) their seventh-straight loss.
No. 10 Kentucky 79, at Arkansas 74 (OT): Bria Goss scored 16 of her 17 points after halftime as the Wildcats (20-3, 8-2 SEC) rallied to beat the Razorbacks (15-8, 3-7).
FASTBREAKS
Nate Wolters scored a school-record 53 points and broke another mark with nine 3-pointers to lead South Dakota State past IPFW, 80-74, in Fort Wayne, Ind. … Two people familiar with the situation say there is still a chance Mike Krzyzewski will return for a third stint as U.S. Olympic men’s basketball coach, but he will wait until the end of Duke’s season to decide. … No. 12 Michigan State expects to have most of its banged-up players in the lineup at Purdue on Saturday night. Keith Appling, Adreian Payne, Gary Harris and Branden Dawson are all expected to play for the Spartans.
