The Belgravia at Main and 5th, just south of the Veltex Building and north of C.W. Moore Park, was renovated in 1977. It won one of Preservation Idaho’s first Orchid awards. That year it shared the honor with Old Boise, the Sonna Building, the Bouquet Bar and the Grand Army of the Republic Hall north of the State Capitol. (DARIN OSWALD/doswald@idahostatesman.com)

Its original construction cost, $70,000, was a bargain considering the building has stood for more than a century with most of its original materials, doors and light fixtures intact.

Its locally quarried sandstone walls are thick - two feet at the basement level, decreasing to a foot-and-a-half at roof height. The roof is galvanized iron, both fire- and sound-proof. Some of the Belgravia's original inhabitants enjoyed upscale amenities that included hot water and indoor plumbing. No wonder some called the Belgravia "the castle." - 1205 S. 5th St.
