Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) captured gold in the super-G at the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships on Feb. 6 in Schladming, Austria. Running 10th in flat light, Ligety knifed the bottom section of the course to move into the lead over France's Gauthier De Tessieres by 0.2 of a second. It marked his third world championships medal and second gold.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Julia Clukey (Augusta, Maine) slid to a second-place finish and secured her first world cup medal at the FIL Luge World Cup on Feb. 9 in Lake Placid, N.Y. Competing on her home track, Clukey had a total time of 1:28.735 and jumped to sixth place in the world cup standings. A day later, Team USA claimed silver in the team relay event. Clukey and Chris Mazdzer (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) combined with the doubles team of Matt Mortensen (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Preston Griffall (Salt Lake City, Utah) to record a total time of 2:35.001.
ARCHERY
Brady Ellison (Glendale, Ariz.) totaled 885 points to win the men's recurve championship at the Vegas Shoot, which ran from Feb. 8-10 in Las Vegas. Ellison shot a 293 on day one followed by consecutive 296 performances over the weekend. On the women's side, Miranda Leek (Des Moines, Iowa) had a three-day total of 873 and finished second behind South Korea's Sung Eun Jeon (879).
BIATHLON
Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished 13th in the men's 12.5-kilometer pursuit at the 2013 IBU World Championships on Feb. 10 in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic. Bailey shot clean and posted a time of 33:55.4. On the women's side, Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) completed the 10K pursuit in 33:01.0 and five penalties to finish 47th.
CYCLING
Elizabeth Newell (Oakland, Calif.) secured the first gold for the U.S. at the 2013 Pan American Continental Track Championships on Feb. 8 in Mexico City. Newell edged Colombia's Jannie Milena in the 10-kilometer scratch race to claim the top spot on the podium. Later that day, Madalyn Godby (Louisville, Colo.) set her second unofficial national record of the week, while also capturing her second bronze medal at the event. She placed third in the women's 200 flying start time trial with a time of 10.933, breaking the previous mark of 11.046.
FENCING
Less than a week after winning gold and bronze at the Arizona Junior Saber World Cup, sisters Emma and Sophie Keehan (Chandlre, Ariz.) again found themselves on the podium together. Emma Keehan earned the silver medal, while Sophie Keehan shared the bronze in the junior women's saber event at the Pan American Championships on Feb. 8 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Also finding a spot on the podium was Jessenia Zambrano (New York, N.Y.). The 15-year-old earned the silver medal in the cadet women's foil competition.
Daryl Homer (Bronx, N.Y.) placed sixth at the Madrid Saber World Cup on Feb. 9. Homer posted a 3-1 record to finish sixth and climb to No. 10 in the world ranking.
FIGURE SKATING
Meryl Davis (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Charlie White (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) totaled 187.36 points in their free skate to capture their third Four Continents gold medal on Feb. 10 in Osaka, Japan. Joining Davis and White on the medal stand was Madison Chock (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Evan Bates (Ann Arbor, Mich.), who took the bronze. Meanwhile in the pairs event, Marissa Castelli (Cranston, R.I.) and Simon Shnapir (Sudbury, Mass.) executed a strong free skate and captured the bronze.
GYMNASTICS
Jake Dalton (Reno, Nev.) used a strong second-day effort to clinch the all- around title at the Winter Cup Challenge on Feb. 9 in Las Vegas. Dalton won the floor exercise and still rings en route to the title.
HOCKEY
The U.S. Men's National Under-17 Team earned a 5-1 victory over Finland to conclude the 2013 Five Nations Tournament on Feb. 10 in Jarvenpaa, Finland. The U.S. finished 2-0-1-1 in the tournament and placed third. Earlier in the week, Team USA cruised to an 8-2 win over Czech Republic, but lost to Sweden, 4-3, and fell to Russia in a shootout, 4-3.
The U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team edged Sweden in overtime, 3-2, to finish fourth at the 2013 Five Nations Tournament on Feb, 10 in Jonkoping, Sweden. Team USA concluded the tournament with a 1-1-0-2 record. The U.S. defeated Czech Republic, 5-1, but lost games to Russia, 4-3, and Finland, 4-2.
RUGBY
The U.S. men's sevens team went 1-4 at the USA Sevens Tournament, which ran from Feb. 8-10 in Las Vegas. The U.S. suffered back-to-back loses to Australia and Samoa, but rebounded with a 22-7 victory over Spain. In the quarterfinals, the U.S. lost to Fiji, 21-19, before dropping a 24-19 decision to Canada in the semifinals.
SKI/SNOWBOARD
Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, Calif.) and Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, Calif.) finished fifth and sixth in the women's downhill at the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships on Feb. 10 in Schladming, Austria. Mancuso also had a strong showing in the super combined, finishing eighth two days earlier. Meanwhile, Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished 22nd in the men's downhill and was Team USA's top finisher.
A weekend of erratic winds and constant restarts forced an FIS Ski Jumping World Cup doubleheader on Feb. 10 in Zao, Japan. Sarah Hendrickson (Park City, Utah) led a strong U.S. effort, soaring to a fourth-place finish in the first event, and improving to third in the final event.
The U.S. women swept the halfpipe event at the European Open on Feb. 8 in Laax, Switzerland. Arielle Gold (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) won the event by 2.7 points after throwing down a run of 77.73. Kelly Clark (West Dover, Vt.) finished second followed by Ellery Hollingsworth (Stratton, Vt.) in third place. Meanwhile, Scotty Lago (Seabrook, N.H.) recorded a third-place finish in the men's halfpipe, while Luke Mitrani (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) placed fourth.
SOCCER
The U.S. Men's National Team built a first-half lead, but Honduras rallied for a 2-1 victory in Team USA's opening game of the final round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying on Feb. 6 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Clint Dempsey (Nacogdoches, Texas) notched his 31st career goal for Team USA in the 36th minute.
In Tom Sermanni's (Glasgow, Scotland) debut as the U.S. Women's National Team's head coach, the U.S. cruised to a 4-1 victory over Scotland on Feb. 9 in Jacksonville, Fla. Christen Press (Los Angeles, Calif.) jump started Team USA with two first-half goals then added an assist in the second half.
SPEEDSKATING
Brian Hansen (Glenview, Ill.) skated to the bronze medal in the men's 1,500- meter at the ISU Long Track World Cup on Feb. 10 in Inzell, Germany. Hansen clocked a time of 1:46.14, followed closely by Shani Davis (Chicago, Ill.), who placed 10th with a time of 1:46.49.
J.R. Celski (Federal Way, Wash.) earned his seventh world cup medal of the season on the first day of the short track world cup in Dresden, Germany. Celski crossed the line in 2:13.195 to collect the silver medal in the 1,500- meter. Meanwhile, Jessica Smith (Melvindale, Mich.) just missed the podium in the women's 1,500, finishing fifth.
TABLE TENNIS
Lily Zhang (Redwood City, Calif.) and Timothy Wang (Houston, Texas) won their divisions at the 2013 National Table Tennis Team Trials, which ran from Feb. 7-10 in San Jose, Calif. Zhang went 11-0 to capture the women's title, while Wang recorded a 10-1 record to secure the men's title.
