The Seattle Mariners officially agreed to terms with starting pitcher Joe Saunders on Tuesday, signing the veteran lefty to a one-year contract.

The deal also includes a mutual option for the 2014 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 31-year-old made 28 starts between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Baltimore Orioles in 2012, finishing with a 9-13 record and 4.07 earned run average.

He also made two postseason starts for Baltimore this past season, going 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA over 11 1/3 innings pitched.

Over eight major league seasons with the Angels (2005-10), Diamondbacks (2010-12) and Orioles, Saunders owns a 78-65 career record with a 4.15 ERA.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Mariners designated first baseman/designated hitter Mike Carp for assignment.
