Fundraiser aims to help Richland man

A "Heart 2 Heart" fundraiser to help Danny Payne, a Richland man who is waiting for a heart transplant, is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2500 Chester Road, Richland.

Cost is $25 per person, $45 per couple. Tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds go toward Payne's heart transplant medical fund.

There will be a spaghetti dinner, bar, music, live and silent auctions, local vendors and a photographer available for photos.

    Ernie Crediford was hiking Badger Mountain on Memorial Day a few years back and noticed purple sage in bloom. The color reminded him of the Purple Heart medal given to military service members wounded in combat.

    Chris Macourek caught a segment on the national news a few years back about a nonprofit that sends simple dresses to needy girls in Africa.

    Her husband had died about six months before, and "I thought doing some volunteer work would be good therapy," she told the Herald.

    It's turned out to be more than that. The Richland woman and a team of faithful Tri-City area seamstresses are on the cusp of sending off their 3,000th dress to the Michigan-based Little Dresses for Africa, which distributes the garments to orphanages, churches and schools.

  • Artists asked to dress up trash cans in Howard Amon Park in Richland

    Richland is asking artists to submit entries for artwork that will be displayed on trash cans in Howard Amon Park.

    Entries are to be a drawing of a favorite season on an 11-by-17 piece of paper using paint, pencil, chalk, etc.

    Deadline to enter is Friday. Entries must include name, email and phone on the back of the artwork, and can be dropped off at the Richland Public Library or the Richland Community Center.

  • Applications begin taken for Richland parks board

    RICHLAND -- The deadline to apply for a seat on Richland's Parks and Recreation Commission is May 3.

    Commission members must be residents of Richland. The commission meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. The term is three years.
