United States national teammates Brad Evans and Eddie Johnson scored one goal each in leading Sounders FC to a 2-0 win over the New England Revolution on Wednesday in the opening match of the Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson, Ariz.
Seattle took the lead in the 27th minute, when Evans nailed a penalty kick after a handball call in the box.
Johnson doubled the lead in the 45th minute, cutting in from the right side and then using his left foot to curl the ball into the top far corner
The Sounders return to training today and Friday. They will resume Desert Diamond Cup competition at 3 p.m. Saturday against Real Salt Lake.
The competition continues next Wednesday with a match against the New York Red Bulls and concludes Feb. 23 with the championship and third-place games.
