Monthly Bellingham Farmers Market is Feb. 16

BELLINGHAM - The second of the once-a-month winter Bellingham Farmers Market days is Saturday, Feb. 16.

The market, set up inside Depot Market Square, will be open the usual hours, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 30 vendors are expected.

The next market will be March 16. The weekly Saturday market opens in April.

Depot Market Square is at the corner of Maple Street and Railroad Avenue.

    BELLINGHAM - The Saturday market that has become a staple of downtown Bellingham from spring through the end of the year begins its inaugural winter market Jan. 19.

    The Bellingham Farmers Market, set up inside Depot Market Square, will be open one Saturday in January, February and March. Hours are the usual 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • No parking allowed on Railroad Avenue during Bellingham Farmers Market

    BELLINGHAM - Parking will not be allowed from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays on a half block of Railroad Avenue, from Maple Street north to the end of the downtown Bellingham Farmers Market.

    The no-parking rule, which is in effect from Saturday, June 1, through October, is intended to create a safer, more pedestrian-friendly environment along the market, said Clark Williams, Bellingham's superintendent of transportation.

    The rule won't be strictly enforced early in the season. Market staff will inform drivers of the new restriction and make sure those who park illegally can leave safely, Williams said. Signs have been posted.

  • Allegiant to offer flights between Bellingham and Reno starting in June

    BELLINGHAM - Allegiant is offering nonstop jet service between Bellingham and Reno beginning Thursday, June 6.

    The company will introduce the new service with fares as low as $69.99 one way. Allegiant plans on offering these flights year round.

    "We are pleased to bring another affordable and convenient travel option to the residents of Bellingham," said Andrew C. Levy, Allegiant Travel Company president, in a news release. "We are confident the Bellingham community will appreciate the convenience of flying nonstop to Reno-Tahoe and the value of bundling their air, hotel and car rental reservation together."

  • Weekly farm business planning course starts Feb. 5 in Bellingham

    BELLINGHAM - New and existing farmers can gain skills in business planning and direct marketing in a series of classes taught through WSU Whatcom County Extension.

    The Agricultural Entrepreneurship classes are 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 5 to March 26, at the extension, 1000 N. Forest St. in Bellingham. They are geared toward small farms.

    Students will leave the classes with a business plan that they have developed.

  • Bellingham Farmers Market kicks off season Saturday, April 6

    BELLINGHAM - Fruit pies, oysters and Indian-style street food are among the offerings from 26 new vendors at Bellingham Farmers Market, which opens for its 21st season on Saturday, April 6.

    "It's a nice selection of folks," Caprice Teske, market director, said of the new faces joining the returning vendors. "There are some interesting crafts in there as well."

    Nine of the new vendors are farms, including Bow Hill Blueberries, LUNARia Farm & Gardens, Mount Baker Berry Co., Rancho El Jadal, Skagit Valley Farm, Wishing Well Farm and Wind Poppy Farm & Nursery.
