Arthritis Foundation schedules Feb. 27 open house in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM - The Arthritis Foundation is holding its first open house Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 809 E. Chestnut St.

The event is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the South Campus Building of PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

The goal is to raise public awareness of the foundation and the events it organizes throughout the region, according to a foundation news release.

The community will be able to tour the office, meet employees and talk with volunteers.

Light refreshments will be served.

  • Here's the lineup for the 2013 Ski to Sea Grand Parade

    BELLINGHAM - The Locker family of Ferndale will serve as grand marshals of the 2013 Ski to Sea Grand Parade, which features floats, marching bands, horses, antique cars and plenty of entertainment.

    The parade starts at noon Saturday, May 25, at Cornwall Avenue and Alabama Street. The route continues south on Cornwall, turns left on Champion Street, left again on North State Street and ends at York Street.

    People line up all along the route to view. Arrive early to set up a front-row seat.

  • Bellingham high schools host fundraising concert for cancer care

    BELLINGHAM - An effort to help a Squalicum High School teacher who was diagnosed with cancer has led to the creation of a fund for other teachers affected by the disease and a multischool concert Thursday, May 16.

    The One Voice Concert will start at 7 p.m. in the gym at Squalicum High School, 3773 E. McLeod Road, and will feature performances from more than 300 band, choir and orchestra students.

    The concert is collaboration by Squalicum, Sehome and Bellingham high schools and will include special alumni guest performances.

  • Public asked to weigh in on route of north Whatcom loop trail

    BELLINGHAM - Parks and recreation insiders have been planning a 45-mile loop trail in north Whatcom County for years, and the public can learn about it at an open house Wednesday, April 10.

    The meeting will be 7 to 9 p.m. at Squalicum Boathouse in Zuanich Point Park. A map showing the proposed route will be displayed.

    The map is not meant to pinpoint the trail's location but to provide a suggestion, said Lauren Erickson, executive coordinator of Whatcom Parks and Recreation Foundation. The foundation wants public input on the route, a version of which is at nooksacklooptrail.org.

  • Estate-planning seminar set for Jan. 30, Feb. 6 in Bellingham

    BELLINGHAM - A two-part seminar at the Squalicum Boathouse aims to take the mystery out of estate planning.

    The free event is open to the public.

    It runs 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 30 and Feb. 6, at 2600 Harbor Loop in Bellingham. Participants will need to attend both dates.

  • Bellingham benefactor to phase out grants for community gardens

    People with plots in Bellingham's city-run community gardens know that change is in the air, and I'm not talking about early signs of spring.

    City officials hope to save money and staff time by having gardeners come up with their own way to administer the gardens. A meeting is tentatively scheduled for the third week of March to begin those discussions in public.

    Now there's more change coming.
