For the fifth straight year, a team of Kamiakin High School students has won a statewide design competition and the opportunity to win the national award in April.
The seven-student group, named Winging It, designed an unmanned aircraft system for the 2012-13 Washington State Real World Design Challenge.
"I congratulate Winging It," said state Superintendent Randy Dorn in a release. "The students, the school and the volunteer coach all care about the competition and have worked hard to achieve these stunning results."
The Real World Design Challenge is an annual competition that provides high school students the opportunity to work on real engineering challenges as a team. This year teams were told to design an aircraft and test its utility in a "mission scenario" involving a missing and injured child. Factors included cost and time needed to search.
Team members include Cooper Atkinson, Kyle Deatherage, Devin Gerboth, Joe Luey, Paul Pierson, Robin Rakowski and Sangeetha Thevuthasan. Kennewick architect Terreance Casey is the coach.
The 2011 team from Kamiakin High took second place at the national competition. Some members of this year's team were on last year's winning team.
