Kennewick seeking applicants for open post

The Kennewick City Council is accepting applications from citizens for the council seat left vacant by Sharon Brown, who recently was appointed to the state Senate.

The council will accept applications for the Ward 2 seat until 5 p.m. March 1.

The person appointed will serve until Dec. 31.

Applicants must be at least 18, registered voters and residents of Kennewick for at least one year. They must live in ward 2, located generally between Union Street and Olympia Street, north of West 19th Avenue and between Union Street and South Vancouver Street south of West 19th Avenue.

Applications are available through the city clerk's office at 210 W. Sixth Ave. or at www.go2kennewick.com. For more information, call 585-4273.

The city council will interview candidates during a special council meeting in March.

    Instead of denying the state’s application for a six-story, 580-space garage, members of the city’s Design Review Committee and Planning and Zoning Commission should have worked with the state and its architect to resolve disagreements, City Council President Maryanne Jordan said Tuesday.

    Failure to work through those disagreements caused an unnecessarily long and contentious approval process, Jordan said.

    In January, the Design Review Committee denied the state’s application on the grounds that its design wasn’t in keeping with the area surrounding the state’s chosen lot northwest of the corner of Washington and 6th streets.

    A local fire official looking to make a political comeback is among those still in the running for a vacant seat on the Kennewick City Council.

    James Hempstead, who served on the council 12 years before losing his seat in the 2009 election, is one of 10 applicants set to be interviewed Saturday at a special council meeting.

    Eleven people applied but one didn't meet the residency requirement. Applicants must live in council Ward 2, which covers the central part of the city of about 75,000 residents.

    Three of the 10 candidates vying for a spot on the Kennewick City Council have dropped out of the race.

    Those withdrawing their names are Brian Bradford, a personal caregiver and past member of the Ben Franklin Transit citizen's advisory committee; Bill Monroe, an unemployed nuclear worker who served as a Mattawa councilman from 2000-06; and Raymond Hui, an attorney and member of the Kennewick Planning Commission.

    The seven other applicants will be interviewed beginning at 9 a.m. today at a special council meeting at City Hall, 210 W. Sixth Ave.
