Tuesday wasn’t a good day for the 40-year-old Tacoma man.

He got in a fight, his mom called the cops on him and police slapped handcuffs on him for allegedly breaking out the windows at a strip mall. Then Pierce County prosecutors charged him with first-degree malicious mischief. Bail was set at $5,000 during his arraignment Thursday.

His response to the charges?

“What?” he exclaimed, according to charging papers. “I did the same thing last week and they only charged me with a misdemeanor.”

In Tuesday’s incident, sheriff’s deputies were called to the strip mall in the 800 block of 72nd Street after passersby reported seeing a man busting the windows and doors at seven businesses. Damage was estimated at $5,000.

One deputy investigating the vandalism remembered arresting the Tacoma man for previously breaking a window in the same strip mall. While pulling up that man’s booking photo to compare with the witness description, deputies were called to a nearby apartment. A woman there told deputies her son “was out of control” and had punched another man in the home. The son was the Tacoma man suspected in the vandalism. stacia.glenn@thenewstribune.com
