For Rogers High senior Christian Barrett, last weekend’s Class 4A state swimming championships were an exclamation point on his strong career.

Barrett qualified for the state meet in each of his four seasons with the Rams, but it wasn’t until Saturday’s championship final of the 200-yard freestyle that he got to cherish his first medal-winning performance.

Barrett placed seventh with a time of 1 minute, 46.57 seconds, and he led the Rams to a 20th-place team finish at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

The 2012-13 season didn’t start out well for Barrett, who also competes with the Tacoma Swim Club, but he was running on all cylinders at the end.

“It was sort of a struggle because I had so much workload,” he said. “I was doing club and high-school swimming. I didn’t really do my best at the beginning of the season, but I was able to get those personal records by the end of the season.”

Barrett also reached state in the 100 butterfly, an event in which he participated in the consolation final and finished 14th in 53.27. That represented a drop of three seconds during the course of the season.

Barrett is leaving the door open for swimming in college, and he’s been talking with coaches at the University of the Pacific (California), California Baptist University, and the Colorado School of Mines.

“I’m sort of working on advertising myself, which is something new that I have to do,” he said.

Rogers also got a medal-winning effort from sophomore Mitchell Crossen, who placed eighth in the 100 freestyle (49.31).

Crossen made his first appearance at the state meet, and he said he was pleased with what he accomplished.

“I was really nervous, but then I relaxed once I got on the blocks, and I swam really good,” he said. “My goal was to make it to finals, and then I swam pretty well in prelims, and I had a good shot at the podium.”

Crossen also competed in the 50 free, and he finished 13th in 22.79.
