The Key Peninsula Veterans group was asked last year to provide a flag-raising ceremony at Volunteer Park for Key Fest, the community’s annual fair.
But they found there isn’t a flag pole at the park.
Instead, they placed small flags around the event’s stage and led the pledge of allegiance.
The veterans hope to install a permanent flag pole to accommodate a large American flag at the park, and they recently presented a proposed to the Key Peninsula Parks board to make it happen.
The KPV has submitted a grant proposal for funds and, if successful, will ask the community for help to complete the project.
Cost of a theft-proof pole and installation is expected to be about $5,000. KPV, a nonprofit organization, will contribute $2,000 in cash and in-kind labor in addition to the grant money it hopes to acquire and will open the endeavor to contributions from other organizations.
