A steady stream of people turned out late Wednesday afternoon and into early evening at the Harbor History Museum to learn more about Gig Harbor's Donkey Creek project. Work on the project is set to begin next month.
The nearly $5 million, yearlong Donkey Creek Restoration and Transportation Project will include construction of an 80-foot pedestrian bridge on North Harborview Drive to open up the creek that runs through the culvert underneath. The project also calls for a footpath under the bridge to run from the newly exposed Austin Estuary to Donkey Creek Park, rendering Austin Street and North Harborview Drive as one-way avenues. Finally, a one-way bridge for cars and a 14-foot-wide pedestrian pathway will be built.
City officials and members of the public alike at the open house were pleased with the impending start of project construction.
"It's exciting," said Jennifer Kester, city project planner. "This has been more than 10 years in the making since it was first visioned."
"I think it's a good idea," said Gig Harbor resident Karen Kiehlmeir, citing plans for daylighting Donkey Creek.
The project is funded through federal, state and local funds.
