A fire in Spanaway destroyed a home and killed a dog Friday morning, but the homeowner escaped with minor injuries.

The cause of the blaze was still unclear Friday evening, said Randy Stephens, assistant chief at Central Pierce Fire & Rescue. The home in the 15400 block of Fair Oaks Drive was “70 percent consumed” when firefighters arrived, Stephens said.

Only one family member was home at the time: the man who escaped. Stephens, operating on limited information, did not know the man’s age, but referred to him as “the dad.” Other family members, including children, lived in the home, but they were away at school when the fire broke out, Stephens said.

The man tried to save the family pets, including two dogs and a pet snake. The rescue failed; the man broke windows trying to get out of the burning home. His injuries were minor, and he refused to be transported to a hospital.

Firefighters found one dead dog inside the remains of the home, but no other pets, Stephens said.
