Tacoma City Councilman Ryan Mello announced Saturday he and his partner, U.S. Army Reserve Lt. Col. Jerry Hallman, will be married next year.

The couple has been together six years.

The initial announcement came via Twitter as Mello said he would spend part of the day visiting Metro Parks sites “to see if one of these venues will work well for our wedding. I’m over-the-moon excited.”

Mello said later by phone that he and Hallman visited the Point Defiance Pagoda where “we found some good vendors.”

Mello said he and Hallman have set the date May 3, 2014, for their wedding, where they expect to welcome some 200 to 300 guests.

“I wasn’t planning on a public announcement,” Mello said. Thanks to the Twitter note, however, “that’s what it’s turning into.”

“Growing up, I didn’t think that marriage wold be a possibility for me,” he said. “It’s exciting to think about all of the details.”
