Clover Park’s David Crisp has been menacing opposing defenses all season.
Olympic got a first-hand display of his skill Saturday night when the highly touted guard led the Warriors to a 62-38 win over the Trojans in a Class 2A boys basketball regional.
Crisp nearly outscored Olympic all by himself, totaling 26 points on 11-for-21 shooting. The 6-foot-1 junior added five rebounds, five assists, two blocks and one steal while turning the ball over just once.
“His game I’ve defined ever since he was 14 years old as big-time saucy,” Clover Park coach Mel Ninnis said. “He’s out here to win. Without him, we wouldn’t be where we’re at.”
Crisp and Clover Park (20-6) were held scoreless for the first three minutes of the game as Olympic’s 2-3 zone gave the Warriors fits.
It wasn’t long, however, till Crisp became a zone killer by hitting 3-pointers. Olympic (18-5) remained in the zone the rest of the half, while Crisp scored 22 points by the break.
“We’ve scouted them pretty thoroughly,” Olympic coach Devin Huff said. “To me, there is two Clover Parks. There is the Clover Park (that) if they’re interested can absolutely annihilate you. Then there is the Clover Park (that) if they play disinterested, will let you hang around. They were interested tonight.”
The Warriors held Olympic at bay with an aggressive, high-pressure defense.
“Obviously, we’re coming together at the right time,” Ninnis said. “Right now, we’re showing up at this rectangle of life, called a gymnasium, and we’re working hard together. We’re not a star, we’re a team.”
Renton 73, River Ridge 57: The No. 2-ranked Indians slowed Hawks senior guard Brad Wallace (14 points) and rolled at Tumwater High School.
Jonathan Patterson and Lavelle Smith combined for 35 points and 21 rebounds for Renton (23-2), while River Ridge (17-7) saw its 14-game winning streak and season come to an end.
Sequim 51, Hockinson 48: The Wolves (21-4) fended off a late rally from the Hawks (14-11), who outscored Sequim 31-19 in the second half.
Hockinson was never able to tie the game, however, even with the last shot.
