High-school spring sports officially opened Monday with the first day of practices, and most teams will play their first games within the next two weeks.

I'm going to be hitting — pun intended — the area ballfields this week at Gig Harbor High and Peninsula High. I've been doing a bit of research today to get caught up, and below, I've got some quick-hit information on this year's Tides and Seahawks baseball and fastpitch teams, including their full schedules.

In case you missed it, here's the fastpitch feature we published Wednesday on Peninsula's Aspen Ison, one of the state's top pitchers who will play next year at Western Washington University.

Look for boys soccer and track and field previews next week, and we'll touch on area golf, tennis, lacrosse and water polo teams after that.

Before you read the following previews, here's a quick disclaimer: Prep teams often have unexpected missing personnel, so I may be incorrect about which players are returning and which aren't. I'm only going off who is eligible to return.

Some athletes move out of the district, or have injuries or other circumstances that force them out of action, but I don't learn about that until talking with coaches. For the same reason, I haven't listed any key newcomers to the squads. The full previews to be published March 6 will have more accurate roster information.

Without further ado...
