If you're into camp cooking or preparing a wild-game dish, set your sights on the Idaho Sportsman Show, Feb. 28 through March 1, at Expo Idaho in Garden City.
Seminars Thursday through Sunday will feature Dutch oven, wild game, and outdoor and trail cooking.
Retired Idaho Department of Fish and Game conservation officer and Dutch oven cooking author C.W. "Butch" Welch will offer seminars at 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday, noon and 7:30 p.m., Saturday and at noon Sunday.
Cee Dub, as he is known, has written five Dutch oven cookbooks and hosted two TV cooking series. You can get more details on him at ceedubs.com.
Randy King, a chef whose passion is cooking and hunting, will offer a wild-game cooking seminar at 1:30 and 6 p.m., Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
King is an outdoor and food writer. His website, chefrandyking.com has cooking tips and recipes.
Stephen Weston, author of "In the Wild Chef," will give seminars on gourmet camp and trail cooking at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Weston has more than 130 recipes in his book. He says he has "assembled, tested, re-tweaked, refined and completed what can casually be called a culinary bible for gourmet camping."
The cooking seminars are held in Western Town Building behind the Expo Building. The seminars are free with paid admission to the Idaho Sportsman Show.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE
In addition, the Idaho Statesman's Outdoors staff will be at the show to talk about hunting, fishing and camping, and to answer questions about the outdoors.
I will be at the Idaho Statesman's booth from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday. Statesman Outdoors editor Roger "Fish Rap" Phillips will be at the booth from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
We'll be giving away Idaho Outdoors calendars at our booth.
The Sportsman Show will feature its traditional popular events, such as the Big Horn Trophy Contest. Admission to the show is free if you bring a set of horns or a rack.
The Idaho Deer Alliance, formerly Deer Hunters of Idaho, will judge antlers and horns from animals taken by a gun.
The Nampa Bow Chiefs will score all horns and antlers of animals taken by bow.
Other features will be the live trout pond, casting competition and booths with tips on outfitted trips throughout the West and as far away as New Zealand. Retailers will have new hunting, fishing and outdoors gear.
Don't be surprised if you come away with an armful of information on how to book an Idaho or Alaska vacation.
State and federal agencies such as the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, and Boise National Forest will have booths on hand with plenty of information on getting outdoors.
You also can get tips from fly fishing, hunting, ATV and wildlife groups.
Seminars are planned on fly fishing, elk and coyote calling, steelhead fishing, dog training, fishing from a kayak and trolling.
