The Nampa School District is trying to dig out from a $4.3 million shortfall that's the result of accounting errors.
The district recently gained a judge's approval to borrow money to meet expenses for the rest of this school year. To help pay back that money, the district is asking voters to approve a one-year $4.3 million supplemental levy on March 12.
Nampa School District has the lowest levy rate of the Treasure Valley's seven largest school districts, which include Boise, Meridian, Kuna, Caldwell, Middleton, Vallivue.
Nampa district officials say property owners' tax rate will stay the same if the levy is approved with a simple majority vote.
"The board's plan is to keep next year's rate the same - pass or fail," said Nampa School District spokeswoman Allison Westfall. If the levy passes, "the board would refinance some construction bonds to keep the projected rate steady," she said. If the levy does not pass, the tax rate would stay as projected, no refinancing would occur and "the district would need to cut more," Westfall said.
