Nittany Lions knock off No. 4 Wolverines, 84-78

Jermaine Marshall scored 25 points, and Penn State upset No. 4 Michigan, 84-78, on Wednesday in State College, Pa., for its first Big Ten victory in more than a year.

The Nittany Lions (9-18, 1-14) had lost 18 straight regular-season conference games dating to last season, but they roared back from a 15-point deficit with 10:39 left behind the energetic play of Marshall. The junior guard scored 19 in the second half, including four 3s that whipped the Jordan Center fans into a frenzy.

D.J. Newbill added 17 points for Penn State, which hit a season-high 10 3-pointers.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 19 points for the Wolverines (23-5, 10-5). All five of Michigan’s losses have come on the road in the Big Ten.

No. 7 Georgetown 79, at Connecticut 78, 2 OT: Otto Porter Jr.’s layup with 9.5 seconds remaining in the second overtime gave the Hoyas a wild victory over the Huskies, Georgetown’s 10th straight win and first-ever at Gampel Pavilion.

Porter scored 21 of his 22 points after halftime to help the Hoyas (22-4, 12-3 Big East) stay in first place in the conference.

In the final 2:03 of the second overtime Georgetown overcame a seven-point deficit, improving to 1-3 in Connecticut’s 23-year-old on-campus arena. The Huskies (19-8, 9-6) play most of their big conference games at the XL Center in Hartford.

DeAndre Daniels had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies.

Texas 92, Oklahoma 86: Myck Kabongo scored 32 points and made an off-balance jumper he threw at the rim as time expired to force overtime, and the Longhorns (13-15, 5-10 Big 12) rallied from 22 points down in the second half to beat the rival Sooners (18-9, 10-5).

Romero Osby scored 31 for Oklahoma, which led 67-45 with 7:54 to play in regulation.

No. 5 Miami (23-4, 14-1 ACC) went 11 minutes without a basket, then finally shook a 10-day scoring slump and pulled away from Virginia Tech (12-16, 3-12) for a 76-58 win in Coral Gables, Fla. … Russ Smith scored 17 points, Franklin High of Seattle grad Peyton Siva had 16, and No. 10 Louisville (23-5, 11-4 Big East) beat DePaul (11-17, 2-13), 79-58, for its fourth consecutive victory. … No. 14 New Mexico (24-4, 11-2 Mountain West) held off San Diego State (20-8, 8-6) at home, 70-60. … Le’Bryan Nash scored a career-high 28 points, Marcus Smart had a strong all-around game, and No. 15 Oklahoma State (21-6, 11-4 Big 12) beat offensively challenged TCU (10-18, 1-14), 64-47, in Fort Worth, Texas. … Dwayne Evans had 21 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots, helping No. 18 Saint Louis (22-5, 11-2 A-10) run its winning streak to 10 games with a 70-53 victory over Saint Joseph’s (15-11, 6-7). … Tray Woodall scored 14 points, and No. 23 Pittsburgh (22-7, 10-6 Big East) pulled away in the second half, handing South Florida (10-17, 1-14) its 10th consecutive loss, 64-44.

Antonita Slaughter scored 17 points to lead No. 16 Louisville (23-6, 11-4 Big East) to a 72-62 victory over Seton Hall (9-19, 4-11). … Chelsea Poppens had 22 points and 11 rebounds, Nikki Moody added 12 points and 10 assists, and No. 23 Iowa State (20-6, 11-5 Big East) rolled to an 83-68 victory over Kansas (16-11, 7-9).
