Tournament lowdown
State champions from the past two seasons (Lynden, 2012 and Clover Park, 2011) are back in the eight-team field but are on the same side of the bracket and could meet in Friday’s semifinal. Many on Lynden’s roster were on the Lions’ football state title team. ... Clover Park junior David Crisp was the starting guard on the Warriors’ state title team in 2011 and has scored 26 points in each of the team’s past two playoff games. ... What team is hotter than Pullman? After suffering a loss in the season opener to Ellensburg, the Greyhounds have won 24 consecutive games. Tournament lowdown
The 2A Southwest District IV is well-represented as three of the teams in the eight-team field are from District IV. The Eaton twins — Kourtney and Karley — have carried top-ranked Mark Morris all season. Also, despite the team’s lack of size (tallest players 5-foot-11), the Monarchs have shown they can beat teams with height as shown by their two wins over district rival W.F. West (61-45 and 49-43). ... What does River Ridge have in common with Mark Morris, W.F. West and Renton? Four of its five losses came to those three teams. Hawks coach Jackie Robinson says his team matches up well with Burlington-Edison, which features an up-tempo style of basketball. ... Surging West Valley of Spokane started January with a 4-4 record, but has since won 15 of its past 16 games. ... This is Cedarcrest’s first state tournament appearance for girls basketball.
